Athletic Department
Ms. Clare Girard, Director

We kicked off our 2000 school year with a new tradition – Burgundy & White Day on a Sunday. Fr. Jude Verley from St. Cyprian, graciously agreed to come to GR and say Mass for our Fall Athletes and their families. Following Mass, the Athletic Club held their first meeting of the school year and our athletes had their team pictures taken. We hope this successful day set the tone for a GReat year. GR had several new coaches on staff this fall and would like to welcome them into the Gabriel Richard Family. We also had a privilege that we have not had since 1990, competing with the Class B Teams in State Tournaments. We have high hopes that we can rise up to meet this challenge.

Football
The Football program was led by new Head Coach, Dave Malecki. Coach Malecki is a 1984 graduate of Gabriel Richard. He was assisted by returning Coach Howard Brumfield and an otherwise new staff including alumnus Art Payette’83. The varsity team celebrated wins over Cabrini, Bishop Gallagher, Hamtramck and New Haven.

Soccer
Our GR Soccer Team also had a new staff (all GR Alumni), led by Head Coach Matt Lividini’92. The Junior Varsity Team was coached by John Favazza’95, Joe Favazza’00 and Jeff Kaul’00. The Varsity Team was District Champion before going down in the Regionals against Notre Dame Prep.

Golf
The Golf Team, coached by Frank Tarnowski’86 had a 5–8 record this season. They continued their long standing tradition by hosting the GR Golf Scramble on September 8.

Cross Country
Coached by Karl Knoll for the 15th year, the boys had an increase in numbers, 17 runners this season. The highlight of their season was a second place finish at the Catholic League Championships. Cross CountryThe girls team, coached by Clare Girard, was led by Sophomore Courtney Cameron.

Tennis
The Girls Tennis Team, coached by 3rd year Coach JR Muniz, won the Catholic League C-D Championship.

Basketball
Coach Jim Duffy and the Varsity Girls celebrated wins over Southfield Christian, Lutheran North, Carleton Airport and Riverview. They had a tough time against the Class B competition in Districts.
